In light of the recent meat contamination issue that has shaken Europe, I would like to touch upon the subject of halāl and harām. For a Muslim, life revolves around doing only what is permissible (halāl) and refraining from the impermissible (harām). This applies when deciding what food we consume and in every other aspect of our lives too.
In the Qur’ān Allāh ta‘ālā addresses the best of humanity, the Ambiyā ‘alayhimus salām, saying, “O Messengers, eat from the good things and act righteously... (23:51)”
The importance of the command to eat only what is good can be realised when we consider that in this āyah Allāh ta‘ālā directs the command to His Messengers ‘alayhimus salām, and through them addresses the believers in general, as explained by Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam:

Once, ‘Umar radhiyallāhu ‘anhu asked those around him of a hadīth of the Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam with regards to the trials and tribulations which were to fall upon the Ummah. Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yamān radhiyallāhu ‘anhu, who knew the hadīth, remarked, “Why do you worry about such a fitnah, O Amīr-al-Mu’minīn, when there is a closed door between it and yourself?” When asked who this ‘door’ was, Hudhayfah radhiyallāhu ‘anhu replied, “Umar radhiyallāhu ‘anhu.”
The existence of pious and righteous servants of Allāh ta‘ālā amongst us is a barrier that stops the torrents of evil from emerging and causing havoc. Upon their demise, the doors to these evils are opened, and the people are tested by trials and tribulations. That is why, as time draws nearer to the Day of Judgement (during which trials and tribulations will increase), the passing away of pious servants of Allāh ta‘ālā become more frequent.

Call towards the path of your Rabb with wisdom and good admonition. (16:125)
This is the order of Allāh ta‘ālā to every believer. Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam spent his entire life calling towards the Path of Allāh ta‘ālā with the concern that every single human being should be saved from the fire of Jahannam and granted entry into Jannah. Out of this concern, he continuously instructed and taught people to do good and refrain from evil.
As followers of Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam, we also need to adopt this concern for our Muslim brothers and sisters and our fellow human beings. We should ask ourselves: “How can I help others to follow the Straight Path, reach Allāh ta‘ālā, acquire entry into Jannah and secure refuge from the Fire of Jahannam?”

Significance of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah
1. Allah has taken oath of ten nights in Sūrah Al-Fajr. According to the majority of the commentators of Qur'ān, the nights are those of the (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
2. Abdullah Ibne 'Abbās radiyallāhu ‘anhu related that the Prophet sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, "Good deeds performed on other days are not superior to those performed on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijjah)." The Companions radiyallāhu ‘anhum inquired, "Not even Jihād?" He replied, "Not even jihād, except for that person who goes out putting himself and his wealth in danger and does not return with anything." (Al-Bukhārī)
3. Abdullāh ibn 'Abbās radiyallāhu ‘anhu narrated that Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam said, "On no other days are good deeds more liked by Allāh than on these ten days (i.e. The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah)." The Sahābah radiyallāhu ‘anhum asked, "O Rasūlullāh! Not even Jihād in the Way of Allāh?" Rasūlullāh sallallāhu alayhi wasallam replied, "Not even Jihād in the Way of Allāh, except for that person who goes out with his life and wealth and does not return with anything." (Abū Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah)

Islām is a way of life sent by Allāh ta‘ālā for the guidance of mankind, and it is the key to success in both worlds. Something that holds such significance holds great importance; hence, it is of great value and therefore needs to be protected at all costs.
For the protection of the religion of Islām, scores of Muslim individuals have contributed through their wealth, their lives, and many other ways and forms, the like of which cannot be found in history. Thousands have sacrificed their lives for the protection of this sacred religion. Islamic history is filled with the names of martyrs, and for the irrigation of Islamic values, much blood of Muslims has been shed.

He sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam advised that it should be performed once every day if possible, otherwise once every year, and if even that is not possible then once in a lifetime.
